Curriculum – Teaching and Learning at Bowen Road Primary

 

At Bowen Road Primary School, our teaching and learning practices are grounded in evidence, collaboration and high expectations for every learner. We use a consistent, research‑informed approach across all classrooms to ensure all students experience high‑quality teaching every day.

 

Pedagogical Framework

Our school follows the DECYP Pedagogical Framework, which is built on cognitive science—how the brain learns best. This ensures our teachers use clear, explicit instruction and strategies proven to make a strong difference to student learning. The framework helps us maintain consistency across the school and continually refine our teaching through coaching, feedback and reflection.

 

Professional Learning Teams

Teachers at Bowen Road work in Professional Learning Teams (PLTs) to analyse student learning, plan targeted instruction and evaluate the impact of their teaching. PLTs strengthen shared expertise and ensure consistent, high‑quality practice across all classrooms.

 

Mathematics

All students from Prep to Year 6 participate in at least five hours of Mathematics each week. Our Maths instruction follows a clear structure, including daily review, explicit teaching and targeted reteaching. Teachers use high‑quality resources developed by Ochre Education, fully aligned with the Australian Curriculum. Gifted and talented students also have additional opportunities to extend their skills.

 

Reading – Multi‑Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)

Reading is taught through a structured, evidence‑based approach to ensure every child makes strong progress. All students receive at least one hour of high‑quality literacy instruction each day, including:

  • UFLI (phonics and word recognition) in Years F–2
  • Word Origins for Years 3–6
  • Fluency lessons several times a week
  • Daily comprehension lessons using text‑based units
  • Daily phonological awareness teaching in Kindergarten

These practices occur at specific intensities and frequencies that ensure every student receives the teaching they need.

 

To ensure learners stay on track, all students complete universal screening assessments (DIBELS) three times a year, with progress monitored regularly in class.

 

At Bowen Road Primary School we recognise that students need to learn how to be ‘learners’. This means we provide opportunities for students to be collaborators, communicators, researchers, self-managers and thinkers to equip them for the future in becoming respectful global citizens of the world.

 

Our Prep to Grade 6 curriculum is derived from the Australian Curriculum http://ww.australiancurriculum.edu.au.

The Australian Curriculum is made up of three dimensions:

Learning Areas (English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, The Arts, Health and Physical Education, Languages and Technologies),

General Capabilities (Literacy, Numeracy, ICT capability, Critical and Creative Thinking, Personal and Social Capability, Intercultural Understanding and Ethical Understanding) and;
